SooFoo Attains Non-GMO Project ‘Verified’ status

San Francisco-based SooFoo is pleased to announce that it has attained Non-GMO Verified status for its packaged grain, rice, and lentil blends. The designation is granted by the Non-GMO Project, a not-for-profit organization committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products, educating consumers, and providing verified non-GMO choices.

Non-GMO Verified status indicates that SooFoo adheres to consensus-based best practices for avoidance of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which are organisms whose natural genetic material has been altered through engineering techniques. SooFoo will proudly display the Non-GMO Verified badge on its packaging so that consumers can easily identify the product as safe for their families.

As consumers continue to seek healthier food options, the concept of genetic modification of ingredients has come into the spotlight. It is estimated that over 80 percent of the food consumed in the United States contains GMOs. Recent studies suggest that the consumption of GMOs can potentially cause serious health issues.

The topic of GMOs is of such concern that Senator Barbara Boxer and Congressman Peter DeFazio together have sponsored The Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act, which would require the labeling of all genetically engineered food in the United States. Natural grocer Whole Foods has also mandated that all products in their U.S. and Canadian stores must be labeled to indicate whether they contain GMOs by 2018.
