El Naranjo, Austin’s exclusively traditional Mexican restaurant, helmed by 2022 James Beard Award winning Chef Iliana de la Vega, her partner Ernesto Torrealba, and daughter Ana Torrealba, Chef de Cuisine, invite Austin residents and visitors to partake in an extraordinary Dia de los Muertos celebration. The celebration captures the essence of cherished Mexican traditions including honoring the deceased by building home altars known as ofrendas with the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and enjoying Pan de Muerto.

Dia de los Muertos is a time-honored Mexican holiday that pays homage to departed loved ones. At El Naranjo, it’s a cultural celebration filled with flavors and traditions that resonate deeply with the soul. El Naranjo’s culinary team, under the guidance of Chef Ana Torrealba, has crafted a special menu for this occasion, featuring the rich and savory Mole Negro. This dark, complex mole sauce is a culinary masterpiece that embodies the heart of Mexican cuisine, and it takes center stage in the restaurant’s Dia de los Muertos celebration.

Individual sized Pan de Muerto, the iconic sweet bread adorned with a distinct skull and crossbones design will be available during brunch service on October 21st, 29th, and November 5th, and it is always better with our Oaxacan style hot chocolate.

For those looking to take a piece of the tradition home, El Naranjo is offering the opportunity to pre-order a full-sized Pan de Muerto. This delicious bread is not only a treat for the taste buds but also a work of art that symbolizes the holiday’s spiritual significance.

In line with tradition, El Naranjo will also feature a stunning shrine, or ofrenda, adorned with marigold flowers, candles, and photographs of cherished, departed loved ones. The ofrenda serves as a heartfelt tribute to the spirits honored during this sacred time.

Chef de la Vega’s daughter and El Naranjo’s newly appointed Chef de Cuisine, Chef Ana Torrealba, expresses her enthusiasm about this celebration: “Dia de los Muertos is a moment for reflection and remembrance, an opportunity to connect with our roots and share the flavors and traditions that make this holiday so special. We hope you will join us in commemorating this meaningful occasion.”

El Naranjo’s Dia de los Muertos celebration promises to be a sensory journey through the heart of Mexican culture, offering guests an immersive experience that captures the essence of this cherished holiday. As seating is limited, we recommend making reservations to ensure you don’t miss out on this unforgettable celebration.
