The Bonney Read is now open in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The classic chowder house serves sustainably procured, locally sourced, and fresh-to-the-minute seafood. The menu is dominated by classic seafood dishes, with some swashbuckling culinary originality in the spirit of its namesakes: two of the most infamous female pirates who ever lived, Anne Bonney and Mary Read.

Rum is the spirit of choice, along with import and American craft brews, as well as an international wine list. The Bonney Read’s founding partners, Andy Ivanov and Ladi Sebestyan, are New Jersey residents who have made their mark with two successful biergartens: Pilsener Haus & Biergarten in Hoboken, and Asbury Festhalle. From Festhalle’s kitchen, they brought Executive Chef James Avery. Chef Avery is a New Jersey native who has worked in Hell’s Kitchen, and Michael Mina’s Sea Blue.

The clams, oysters, mussels, crab, fresh and saltwater fish are served in simple, honest preparations. There’s a center-stage raw bar, and a rotating selection of local, East and West Coast oysters, clams, crab, and shrimp.
