THE CHASTAIN – a New American neighborhood cafe and restaurant – opened November 9, in the space that formerly housed Horseradish Grill (4320 Powers Ferry Road Northwest). Acquired late 2019 in partnership with local investment firm ASH Ventures, the property has been reimagined to include an on-site garden, multiple patios, a to-go counter, cafe seating and more. Helmed by Executive Chef and Operating Partner Christopher Grossman, the restaurant’s menu features a seasonal selection of refined New American cuisine. THE CHASTAIN opens with dinner service and morning counter service, including coffee and light bites like pastries, with lunch, brunch and online ordering to come in the following weeks.

In developing the menu, Chef Christopher draws inspiration from the best local ingredients and seasonal harvest to weave together spins on classic favorites and inventive new dishes. A rotating selection of approximately 20 dishes, the menu is arranged from small to large plates and includes everything from fresh-made pastas and risottos to salads, soups and vegetables. The variety of craveable dishes are all made from scratch and prepared as a “choose-your-own-adventure” to be enjoyed in a comfortable setting. Prior to his most recent chef position at Atlas, Grossman worked under Thomas Keller at world-renowned Napa Valley restaurant The French Laundry and served as Chef de Cuisine under Gerry Klaskala at Aria in Atlanta.

Leading the hospitality and service team is General Manager Justin Craft. Justin brings decades of operational experience to THE CHASTAIN team, including roles with Fifth Group Restaurants, Isakson Living and Bones. A native Atlantan and graduate of The Culinary Institute of America, Justin was a Research and Development Chef in Southern Living Magazine’s test kitchen before making the move into hospitality and operations. Justin helms training and management of the hospitality and service team at THE CHASTAIN with a focus on creating a refined, knowledgeable and welcoming team of service professionals.

Juan Cortes leads the restaurant’s beverage program as Beverage Manager. Sourcing will be an integral piece of the program, and the spirit selection features a variety of lesser-known spirits used to reinvent the classics. The wine selection is broad but approachable, and there is a selection of local beer on draft.

Set inside a former roadside country store, THE CHASTAIN honors and maintains the soul of the historic building while opening up the 2500-square-foot main floor space for a lighter and brighter atmosphere that brings the outdoors in. Local firm Siegel Construction & Design led the project, which keeps the timeless feel of the restaurant and features large iron-rimmed windows and doors that connect the inside with multiple patios and spotlight the restaurant’s lush garden. A neutral color palette and wood, iron and leather details throughout drive home the outdoors in look and complement the dining room’s casual sophistication.

Chef Christopher plans to source some ingredients from the on-site garden for THE CHASTAIN’s menu. Surrounded by the garden is the bright, open South Side Patio, ideal for enjoying morning counter service from the cafe. In addition, there will be the Old Oak Terrace – a reservation-only dining spot beneath the historic oak tree with romantic bistro lighting. Serving as an extension of the dining room, the terrace is also be open for seating in the morning during coffee and pastry hours.

The restaurant rests on the edge of Atlanta’s historic Chastain Park, steps away from the horse park and amphitheater. In an effort to maintain the safety of guests and staff, indoor seating is limited upon opening. Online ordering and curbside pick-up, dubbed TCGO, will also be available shortly after opening. A casual morning counter-service is offered Monday through Saturday from 7am to 2pm, ideal for neighbors on their morning walk to drop in for a pastry and coffee-to-go. Dinner service runs Monday through Saturday from 5pm to 10pm.
