When Hurricane Harvey pummeled Houston in 2017, one of the Lone Star State’s biggest restaurant groups offered a helping hand. 

From August 31 to September 4, 2017, Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group (recently sold and split up) donated 20 percent of all systemwide sales—revenue corralled from more than 50 Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, Del Frisco’s Grille, and Sullivan’s Steakhouse locations across the U.S.—to the Houston Food Bank. In total, Del Frisco’s donated $805,000 to aid the Houston Food Bank’s post-Harvey relief efforts.

Additionally, Del Frisco’s chefs spent their personal time cooking for emergency responders, as well as more than 700 people at Houston-area shelters housing those displaced by the storm.

“We are a Texas-based company and [Hurricane Harvey] struck close to home for Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group,” says Jon Peck, regional director for Del Frisco’s Grille. “As a company, we came together to help our local team and community in the best way we knew how—through food.”

Del Frisco’s isn’t alone in showing its compassionate soul in troubling times.

Over the last two years, Denny’s has taken its Mobile Relief Diner to disaster-stricken areas, providing free meals to Houston-area communities impacted by Hurricane Harvey, Florida areas battered by Hurricane Michael, and California cities like Chico and Redding affected by wildfires. To date, the 53-foot mobile kitchen has served pancakes, bacon, coffee, and other breakfast staples to over 25,000 residents of affected areas and first responders.

“We were founded and we exist because we simply love to feed people,” Denny’s chief brand officer John Dillon says. “Feeding people when they need it the most, which we’re able to accomplish with our Mobile Relief Diner providing meals in the wake of a natural disaster, is one of the best possible ways to bring our mission to life.”
