To celebrate Chinese New Year, Hakkasan New York will put a sexy spin on the classic fortune cookie. The Cantonese restaurant in New York’s Theater District has tapped critically acclaimed, international best-selling author Candace Bushnell to write fortunes touching on subjects central to life in New York City: sex, love, power and, of course, Manolo Blahnik.

Candace’s fortunes will be printed on red ribbon and wrapped around golden macarons, which will be served from January 28 to February 19 as an à la carte dessert option and as part of the restaurant’s prix fixe Chinese New Year menu.

While this is her first foray into fortune-writing, Candace Bushnell has long been known for her deeply honest contemplations on women, relationships and dating. Her generation-defining classics (including Sex and the City and Lipstick Jungle) convey her unique ability to tap into the zeitgeist of any New York minute – a skill that will feature prominently in her fortunes and in her upcoming book, Is There Still Sex In The City?, on sale August 2019.

“Life in New York is sexy, vivacious, glamorous and always exciting,” says Candace. “My goal with these fortunes is to spark conversation and reflection on the thrilling lives we lead in New York City.”

Because the number eight in Chinese culture symbolizes wealth, fortune and prosperity, Candace has written a total of 88 fortunes for Hakkasan New York. The fortunes will adorn a new macaron conceived by Hakkasan Group’s Global Executive Pastry Chef Dale DeSimone specifically for Chinese New Year 2019.

The sweet almond-flavored macarons are made with a zesty mandarin orange filling and are colored red and gold, symbolizing luck in Chinese culture. The macarons are served atop a chocolate coin, which hides dry ice for a theatrical tableside presentation. Hakkasan New York will also celebrate the Year of the Pig with a rendition of the wishing tree tradition inspired by the Lam Tseun trees in Hong Kong. Guests are invited to write their wishes for the year ahead on ribbons to be hung on the hand carved wooden screens in the restaurant.

There will be an 8-course Chinese New Year set menu available for $168 per person for a minimum of two people, culminating with Candace Bushnell’s exclusive fortune macarons as a special dessert. The fortune macarons will be available globally at Hakkasan restaurants in New York City, San Francisco, Las Vegas, London and Shanghai during Chinese New Year. Each restaurant has tapped a local author or personality to write witty fortunes musing about the destination.

In addition to Candace Bushnell for Hakkasan New York, the writers include:

  • Hakkasan San Francisco: Mayor Willie Brown
  • Hakkasan Mayfair and Hakkasan Hanway Place: Will Self
  • Hakkasan Shanghai: Vincent Fang
