For chains looking to expand, Mastercard released valuable data in its “2016 Global Destination Cities Index,” which could make the decision on where to open new stores a little easier. The study, which projects visitor volume and spend estimates for the year, and gives insight into how consumers spend in cities throughout the world.

This year, 132 of the most visited cities in the world were ranked. Leading the list was Bangkok, which is projected to receive 21.47 million international overnight visitors this year. London, Paris, Dubai, New York, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Istanbul, Tokyo, and Seoul, were also listed in the top 10.  

The study also listed several other locations are listed as the top growing, and noted trends in growth in the Asian Pacific, Middle East, and Africa. Cities expected to continue growing are Chengdu, Abu Dhabi, Colombo, Tokyo, Riyadh, Taipei, Xi’an, Tehran, and Xiamen.

In addition to naming these top cities, the report also breaks down why visitors travel to each city, such as on business or on vacation, as well as gives information on how these visitors spend money on dining, lodging, and shopping.
