Non-profit food rescue, Lovin’ Spoonfuls, is growing its organization by adding its third refrigerated food rescue truck to the streets of Boston. The organization is dedicated to eradicating hunger across Massachusetts by rescuing perishable, unserved food from farms, supermarkets, restaurants, and other retail outlets and delivering it to local crisis centers and social assistance organizations so they can feed wholesome, healthy food to those who need it the most.
"We measure the growth of our organization by one truck and one driver. Adding another truck means rescuing over 150,000 additional pounds of food per year and it means preventing that same amount of food from going to waste. We're grateful for the opportunity an additional vehicle provides to the growth of Lovin' Spoonfuls,” says Ashley Stanley, founder and executive director of Lovin’ Spoonfuls.
Over 96 billion pounds of food is wasted each year which is roughly 40 percent of all the available food in the United States. Since founding Lovin’ Spoonfuls in 2010, Stanley and her team have rescued and distributed over 715,000 pounds of fresh, healthy food to various organizations in the area and have fed tens of thousands of Bostonians. With the addition of the third truck, named “Large Marge,” Lovin’ Spoonfuls will be on its way to rescuing it’s millionth pound of food before the end of 2013.
