Reduced Sodium Mineral Salt Introduced in US


Swedish salt processor Salinity, announces the launch of the new product SALTWELL into the U.S. market. SALTWELL is a natural and environmentally friendly product that contains 35 percent less sodium than regular salt. Salinity will be showcasing this exciting new ingredient, SALTWELL, at the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, Calif., March 8 to 10.

“Health experts agree that we consume too much salt in our diets. With more than 75 percent of sodium coming from processed food, Salinity is proud to deliver a solution to the U.S. market that will significantly reduce sodium in food manufacturers’ products while still delivering great taste,” says Thomas Hultman, SALTWELL Export Manager. “SALTWELL is a naturally occurring compound that will enable sodium reduction achievement to be taken to the next level.”

SALTWELL is exclusively extracted from million year old underground brine reserves below the Atacama Desert in South America– one of the most dry and sterile environments on Earth. After mineral-rich water is pumped upwards from beneath the desert crust, SALTWELL grains are extracted in a natural, solar-driven process. The sun itself causes the water to evaporate, yielding the naturally occurring salt.

SALTWELL is a one-grain salt with 65 percent Sodium Chloride (NaCl) and 30 percent Potassium Chloride (KCl). Dried by the sun, the minerals are baked together in such a fashion that SALTWELL crystals form homogenous grains, each consistent with each other. Being a one-grain mineral salt lowers the sodium impact of any food product without sacrificing the flavor or functionality, which is why SALTWELL performs and tastes just like ordinary salt.

“SALTWELL has been tested in many applications such as meatballs, chicken, oatmeal, and bread and has received very good results on taste, structure, and process handling,” says Ann Winzell, Technical and Chemical Specialist for SALTWELL. “Unlike blended solutions for sodium reduction that can taste harsh and bitter, SALTWELL has great flavor and can be replaced one to one into established recipes and formulations.”

SALTWELL has received FDA approval to be labeled as an all-natural mineral salt and has the potential to be the next generation of sodium reduction products for the food industry.
