New Japanese Concept Nokoribi Opens in Richmond, Virginia

Andrew Manning, Patrick Phelan, and Megan Fitzroy Phelan announced the opening of Nokoribi, the newest addition to their growing restaurant group, which also includes Longoven and Lost Letter. An approachable new restaurant inside The Veil Brewing Co.'s flagship taproom in Richmond's Scott's Addition neighborhood, Nokoribi will open tomorrow, Saturday, April 22.
Inspired by the Japanese dish Yakitori, Nokoribi, which translates to "embers" in Japanese, will showcase Japanese pub-inspired menu items to complement The Veil's diverse beer offerings. Tom Gillis, a longtime chef at Longoven, will join Andrew Manning and Patrick Phelan to lead the Nokoribi kitchen as Head Chef, cooking meats, seafood, and vegetables live over Binchotan charcoal. Highlights from the opening menu include “karaage” (fried) like Pork Katsu Sando with Cabbage and Tonkatsu Sauce and Maitake Mushroom with Spicy Mayo, Furikake, and Lemon; “yaki” (grill) like Chicken Meatball with Garlic Mirin Glaze and Shrimp with Yuzu Kosho and Furikake; and noodles like Udon with Warm Dashi Butter, Mushroom, Tamari Egg Yolk, and Katsuobushi.
“At Longoven, we use the Binchotan grill for almost all of our proteins, and the Japanese kitchen has always been a huge inspiration for me,” says Executive Chef/Owner Andrew Manning. “We wanted to do something different than the usual offerings you find at breweries like pizza, burgers, and tacos. As a restaurant group, we wanted to bring something different to the Richmond food scene, and ultimately landed on Nokoribi, which will offer handheld foods that are easy to walk around with and eat while drinking beer.”
Guests can enjoy dishes at counter seats with views of the open kitchen, as well as throughout the 8,000 square foot taproom. With a mission to provide high-quality food with affordable pricing, Nokoribi will bring a fresh take on in-house dining options to the bustling brewery scene in Scott's Addition. Nokoribi is open daily for lunch and dinner service.
