With growing emphasis on health and obesity in America, researchers are investigating how increased food legislation is affecting the restaurant industry.

Two scientists in particular are studying the consequences of a new menu labeling law.

Researchers Dr. Ming-Chin Yeh and Dr. Charles Platkin of the City University of New York School of Public Health at Hunter College are surveying the perceptions of owners and managers whose business practices are impacted.

Their survey will focus in particular on the implications of Section 4205 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, a law that requires establishments owning 20 or more locations to list calorie content for standard menu items on their restaurant menus, menuboards, and drive-thru menu displays.

This law also requires other nutritional information including fat, saturated fat, sodium, cholesterol, carbohydrates, fiber, sugar, and protein content to be available upon written request.

The online survey takes about 10 minutes to complete. The researchers have predicted that about 1,000 individuals will take the survey, after which they’ll analyze responses only in aggregate in order to protect the anonymity of surveyed individuals.

Yeh and Platkin will publish a report of their findings for the public once they compile responses.
