Following months of hibernation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, nine-time James Beard Award-winning One Off Hospitality group (avec, The Publican, The Violet Hour, Big Star) announced it’s once again opening doors to Dove’s Luncheonette, the acclaimed collective’s retro-inspired tribute to Chicago diners of bygone eras. On Monday, October 11th at 9am, the Wicker Park fan favorite is reviving its nostalgic 45 RPM record stacked jukebox at 1545 N. Damen Avenue, with a refreshed daytime menu of Southern-inspired Mex-Tex comfort dishes, mezcal-focused cocktails and more. “When we opened Dove’s in 2014, our idea was to provide the Wicker Park neighborhood with a chill place to grab a seat, some delicious food and a great drink,” says One Off Chef and Partner, Paul Kahan. “Since the pandemic hit, our team is often inside the Luncheonette for meetings, and it’s really awesome to see folks knocking on the doors and windows asking us when we’re going to open again. We know people are really excited about this concept making it through the pandemic, and we couldn’t be happier to see that we’ve become a fixture in the neighborhood for many Chicagoans.” To celebrate its return, Dove’s is taking over the Big Star taco truck on Sunday, October 10th, setting up shop outside of the Wicker Park Farmers Market and serving up free mini Chicken Fried Chicken sandwiches to the first 250 people who swing by. Starting at 10:00 a.m., the team will hand out a bite-sized take on their cult-favorite Chicken Fried Chicken dish, served on a brioche bun with pasilla salsa seca and a chorizo gravy dipper. Set to the sounds of Dove’s nostalgic in-house soundtrack, streamed via Spotify and available as a “take home” keepsake for all who scan the QR code available at the truck, the team will excitedly welcome back the community they dearly missed over the past months. WHAT’S NEW – FOOD + DRINK: One Off Executive Chef / Partner Paul Kahan, in collaboration with the group’s Culinary Director Chris Miller, and recently appointed Dove’s Executive Sous Chef Sam O’Keefe, have reshaped the diner’s menu to exclusively serve up breakfast and lunch favorites. Diners can breathe easy knowing hearty longtime mainstays such as Chicken Fried Chicken, the Back to Life cocktail and Burt Ends Hash still remain, while looking forward to new interpretations of Southwestern diner classics like Masa Pancakes with mole spiced maple syrup and Oaxacan Tamales with fried eggs. Dishes will be complemented by Bar Director Sam Carlton’s tequila and mezcal-friendly cocktails, in addition to an expanded lineup of nonalcoholic offerings. WHAT’S TO COME: Over the coming months, the team will roll out an expanded “grab and go” menu with food and fresh squeezed juices, perfect for those hopping on and off the nearby Damen Blue Line stop or for those not yet ready to dine in. Come springtime, Dove’s will introduce an expanded sidewalk patio to accommodate those looking to take in vibrant energy Wicker Park offers, right in the heart of the neighborhood.
