Applebee’s announced reduced-calorie additions to its menu with a selection of entrees that have less than 550 calories per serving.
Featured on the low-cal menu are Zesty Roma Chicken & Shrimp; Lemon Parmesan Shrimp; Napa Chicken & Portobellos; Roasted Garlic Sirloin; and Signature Sirloin with Garlic Herb Shrimp.
Jessica James, Applebee’s executive chef, explains in the company announcement that the secret to maintaining flavor and large portions is technique coupled with lighter seasoning. “By using citrus oils to add fresh flavors instead of calories, and steaming our potatoes before frying, our new menu fills you up with great-tasting food, minus the guilt,” she says.
The Zesty Roma Chicken & Shrimp combines a juicy grilled chicken breast, blackened shrimp, and parmesan cheese atop a hash of crisp red potatoes, zucchini, red onions, Roma tomatoes, basil, and peppers, finished with a Zesty tomato sauce. The Lemon Parmesan Shrimp features tender blackened shrimp sautéed with fresh tomatoes, onions, and basil, served over a bed of creamy rice with a lemon cream sauce and parmesan cheese.
On the Applebee’s YouTube channel Chef James explains the techniques used to create the new low-calorie entrees.
