Since the competitive barbeque season fired up earlier this month, chef Andrew Evans, owner of Easton, Maryland’s BBQ Joint has already earned a serious win.
Earlier this month, Evans and his competitive barbeque team, Walk the Swine, took Middletown, Delaware by storm, earning First Place for Pork and Ninth Place for Brisket out of 56 competing teams at the Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) sanctioned Middletown BBQ Cook-off in Delaware.
Each year the Middletown BBQ Cook-off brings in competitors from around the country including 2012’s top-ranked team, 3 Eyz BBQ from Owings Mills, Maryland and Chix, Swine & Bovine, Bbq., a top team from Jessup, Maryland. Surprisingly, you won’t find most of the top-ranked KCBS teams in Kansas City – A number of the top 50 nationally ranked teams hail from the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Armed with a brand new, state-of-the-art, competitive barbeque cart that was custom built for Evans and his team, Walk the Swine is ready to finish the barbeque circuit.
Sharing the ring with such all-star champions, Andrew was as thrilled by his first-place win as he was surprised.
“People keep asking me my secret! Well, it’s actually a complete shocker: I ran out of my usual combination of ingredients needed for my pork injections, so I had to improvise on the fly. I used what I had on hand, and as it turned out, it was a winning combination,” Evans says.
Next for Andrew, his souped-up cart, and his new secret sauce is the next the Safeway BBQ Battle in Washington, D.C.
